DIY MANTLE PROJECT ///

I am finally so excited to share our mantle project with you all!

When we moved into the house the previous owners had used the space above the mantle to mount the TV {there were huge marks where the mount used to be} so we figured we would do the same. But after a while {and a couple months of strained necks} we decided to take it down, get a tv center and just use the space above some wall space.

Soon into taking the process of taking the TV mount off the wall we realized it was a bigger project than we originally planned. The previous owners had closed up what used to be a built in {and they didn't do the neatest/best job} so our original plan wasn't going to work.

After staring at the ugly mess for a few weeks we finally had a plan! Cover the whole thing up!

Here's how we did it!

/// Shopping for supplies at Lowe's ///
2 - 1x2x6 Boards
6 - 1x6x6 Boards
1 - Small can of stain

/// Stuff we already had at home ///
Instruments to distress the wood boards with
Powerdrill
Hammer
Nails
Dropcloths
Towel

First we measured and cut the wood to give the boards some dimension off the wall, then screwed in to attach

After distressing the boards {hammers, nails, & chain pounding} We measured and cut the boards, then we hammered them to the braces.

We probably could have stained them before we attached them to the wall but I wanted to see it up before we stained it.

We used a technique that I saw on the /// Young House Love Blog /// and I just love the way it turned out!

Cameron and I love the way it turned out! We purchased some art from Etsy, and added some great elements we had from around the house.
//// HELLO SIGN from Oh Dier Living /// 'Our Name' Chalkboard Print from Designs by Nicolina in Clipboard Frame from Crate & Barrel /// Ball Jar Print from The Wheatfield in a Frame and Matte from Hobby Lobby ///

Mixed with various antiques and Target finds over the past few years + my favorite chevron chair.

Also in the living room a custom Disney print from the fabulous Two Novembers on Etsy /// check her out ///

This piece is one of the few things that we still have from our apartment in the house. From a dear friend we updated the knobs /// they are old from Anthropologie but similar are here /// I found the prefect matching vase at a place called 'Real Deals' and added some sticks.

The tag wall hanging we got from a shop in Downtown St.Augustine a few years ago and the little glass tray to hold our keys is from Marshalls

I love the cozy living room space we have created. What's your favorite space in your home?
